![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So, You decided you need a new job or career! First off, save yourself, loose the mindset about whatever the media is saying about the economy. Don't believe the economy is doing good or bad. Believe in yourself and your ability to achieve more than you currently have. To do such, arm yourself with the best tools currently available whether they be physical or mental. At any given time, nearly half the population, 50% of the people, are planning to change jobs. Desires for better pay, a manageable workload and more career advancement opportunities are the top factors for voluntary turnover in companies. Whether it is in health care, sales, professional services, real estate, business services, or any other kind of area presented. People are always looking for the bigger better deal (BBD). It is human nature. That is even why you are here now. Test this statistic yourself, go ask another person if they want a bigger better deal. If they say no, then you were the 50% by yourself. Either way, you are still 100% responsible for yourself to make the effort to get your own bigger better deal. So, if you want it, YOU have to go get it. When searching for employment or clients don't limit your search. Use as many multiple resources to increase your exposure to employers or clients. Get the word out, whether through news, media, print, vocal, networking, internet, whatever. If you don't advertise your services are available, we guarantee you will not likely achieve more than you already have. Of course there is the occasional lotto winner, prince(ss) from a foreign land, person lightning struck, or inventor of the time machine who will void the aforementioned guarantee. When looking for employment or new clients, let people know how you can help them. Clearly state your purpose or objective up front, but, word it so it emphasizes how they will benefit. This should be accomplished in your prospectus, resume, headline, advertisement or vocally. When sending out resumes or advertisements you are marketing yourself. So, believe in the law of averages. The more you send, the more responses you will get. If you receive a 1% response on a marketing campaign that is one lead per hundred, 10 per thousand or 100 per ten thousand. That is only a lead. It does not mean you will get the position or contract. You have to eventually close the deal in the interview. Of course it does not help to market the wrong industry. Often recruiters state don't send a generic resume across the board, and we agree. There is no sense marketing brain surgeons if you want to work in entertainment. However, if a individual has medical skills why wouldn't they promote themselves to doctors offices, hospitals, clinics, veterinary practices, emergency rescue services, private individuals, retirement homes, hospices or traveling care providers. And, why wouldn't they expand their horizon to other locations, states, or countries. No sense in limiting opportunities, start thinking of other areas where an entry can be gained to get into the business or industry. As such, don't send out sloppy presented materials. Properly prepare to prevent poor performance. Be ahead of the game. Compel the prospect to want to make contact. Do what you have to do. Maybe searching for a specialized industry will prevent you from obtaining your next position. If your training is in a particular area but that area is not in demand then you might want to consider branching out into other areas. Don't let pride get in your way. It is real easy to believe that a position is below or beneath you. However, this is about enjoyment in a career so why not keep the income coming in while performing at a second position or volunteering. When doing such, new networks of individuals, mentors, and friends will arise that may help you get further along in other endeavors. Sometimes a step back allows you to get two or three steps forward. Short term or temp positions could lead to longer endeavors or can just tide you over till brighter futures arise. Be prepared to answer questions when your interviews start lining up. If interviews are not lining up, then go back to the last few paragraphs and determine where you need to revise your plan, marketing and advertising. Searching for a career or clients is analogous to climbing stairs. With each step there are greater responsibilities, stricter requirements, stronger barriers of entry, etc. However, if viewed like a puzzle, there are key points to overcome for each step. Keep your eyes open to steps ahead and plan towards them, but, you must acknowledge each step along the way. If a particular step appears unattainable it is likely there is a step that has not been traversed and mastered yet.
